Going back in time, I promised to show our pics from our first trip to the Grand Canyon (South Rim) in September, which is another place everyone must see in their lifetime (Alaska is one too). Everyone always tells you to see these natural wonders, and you can not realize just how beautiful and moving these places are until you experience it. I want to return to the Grand Canyon someday and spend a week there to slow down and enjoy it, rather than spend three hurried days running around from one view to the other. We spent one night in a Park lodging which was expensive ($90?) for the simple motel and two nights camping, which turned out to be very pleasant and I would do it again. The weather was perfect, in the 70's at that time.
We did not hike at all on this trip, but in the future would. A giftshop worker told us of her husband, age 80, who hikes once a week starting at 6 p.m. at sundown, into the canyon from one rim to the other, hiking all night when it is cooler.
Here we go with the pics (a few are in the Glen Canyon area north of Grand Canyon, near Lake Powell). Speaking of Glen Canyon, check out a fun book by Edward Abbey(who became and underground cult hero as a self declared extremist and 'desert mystic') called "The Monkey Wrench Gang" (its sequel is "Hayduke Lives!).
